A number of civil society organisations have issued an urgent call for action against a large petroleum storage investment to be build on the unspoiled shore of the Karpaz  Peninsula close to Yedikonuk/Efta Komi village. There are plans to build a large petroleum terminal with 100 large petroleum tanks that can meet the demand from neighbouring countries or passing ships. This area will be also be declared a Free Zone, meaning the company will be able to operate without any restrictions or legal legislation. The village is in the İskele/Karpaz region where natural beauty is integrated with historical richness, including the wild, untouched shores of Efta Komi, Golden Beach, and Kantara Castle. There are also the local eco-tourism areas of Büyükkonuk (Komi Kebir), Yedikonuk (Efta Komi) Kumyalı and Mehmetçik villages. It is also a turtle nesting area and full of orchid and rare plant species as well as olive and carob trees. The plans for the petroleum terminal carry great risks and could create an environmental disaster not only in Cyprus but the entire eastern Mediterranean. Support demonstrations against these horrific plans by joining the Facebook group here.
